How Orienteering Works

Orienteering is a fun all year sport that will require a map, controls, and a good big area. It's played all over the world and the objective of it is to try and collect all the control stamps as fast as you can. The map gives you a lot of clues to help you get to your destination.

You will need a team of really fit people to help you do the job. Everyone in your team will be doing their own different courses. The map will be guided to the same area but different controls. First of all while you are in your course you always have to orientate your map the right way to ensure you can run to the correct controls. At each control there will be a place for you to stamp in your paper. You will have to stamp the controls in your paper to continue on to the next one. You will have to run hard to every control and orientate your map into the right direction.

In orienteering you got to know how to follow the map because if you don't follow it you will get lost. It doesn't matter how fast you run but it all comes down on how well you can orientate your map. In a normal orienteering course there are around about 15 controls which run for 3.5 kilometers. On the bottom right of the map there is a legend which tells you what the obstacles are. The map is the most important part of orienteering and it gives you the answers, you just got to find it.

In my opinion I enjoy orienteering a lot because it offers a lot of orientation and running skills. You need to be really fit to play. Everyone should give it a go!
