Questioning- Personal Inquiry- Gemma

How to speak/write French

Questions:
  • How do you write in French?
  • How do you speak in French?
  • How do you pronounce words properly?

These questions are important to my inquiry, because they are what I need to know to have a successful outcome. I need to know(by the end of the inquiry) how to write, speak and pronounce French.

Exposure- Personal Inquiry- Gemma

Learning to speak/write French

What?: I would like to learn how to greet and learn the basics of the French language. I would then like to learn how to write the words I can speak. I would like to increase the difficulty of the words I learn as they inquiry progresses.

Why?: I have always wanted to learn hot to speak a different language and I thought if, in the future, I want to go to France I will be able to communicate with people. Also in College I might want to continue with the language so learning French now will give me a head start on the basics.

Inspired?: This video inspired me because if french children can learn English then I can learn French!VIDEO

Camp 2013- Gemma

The 22nd October had approached. It's what I had been waiting and preparing for since the start of term 3. Camp 2013- held at Peter Snell Youth Village, Whangaparoa. Packed with everything, bag as full as full can be, we all headed for Whangaparoa.

The bus trip: Along the way we had to complete a scavenger hunt. This included questions and activities such as; what is the first bridge you cross,  how many signs, places do you see/pass, draw the signs you see and about 10 other questions.

Arrival: Finally after about an hour and a half of a slow drive, we reached PSYV (Peter Snell Youth Village). We; unpacked our bags from the bus, all equipment was unloaded, we got introduced to Gordon and his wife (Managers of PSYV) and started our first rotation of activities but of course after a scrumptious morning tea.

Activity 1, day 1 (rifle shooting): Rifle shooting was a great way to start camp. Shooting the rifle was a bit scary. We used slugs (bullets) to shoot tins (small and large). I shot a few which was exciting. Rifle shooting was cool with the group I'm in (The Champions).

Activity 2, day 1 (rock climbing): Rock climbing was harder than it looked with moving hand-holds and hard-to-reach places  but with a lot of support, it was achievable.

Waterslide: After each night doing the waterslide was compulsory. It was cold and quite scary but everyone did it.

Burma trail: The first day was very fun and to finish it off we did the burma trail. We didn't knw what was ahead of us nor did we know that there were some sneaky parents in the bush. prepared to scare us. There was a lot of screaming throughout from the group.

Activity 1,2,3 & 4, day 2: Wednesday there was 4 activities (camp cooking, initiative course, archery and absieiling). Camp cooking was...interesting. We used hobostoves to cook mini pancakes. They were successful but messy. Next was the initiative course. We had to work as a team to get through all stations. It was challenging but we finished all stations with good turnouts. After we had archery (with my dad). I felt like a girl version of Robin Hood. The string was painful- striking my face and arm several times- but I shot a lot of targets scoring 80 points overall. Lastly we did abseiling. I went first and found it easier than I first anticipated.

Cotton- Eyed- Joe dance and Talent Show: That night we had the Cotton-Eyed-Joe group performance. Our group (The Champions) came 3rd and it was very fun. After, all the students had to do an act (solo or group). The group I was in (Girl Power) came... 1st! It was awesome to hear how our hard work and commitment had paid off.

Snowplanet (Thursday): Wow! What an exciting day that was. I learnt how to ski properly- without any major falls. It was hilarious to watch my dad try and snowboard. Unfortunately for two people (Jansje and Callahan) the day wasn't the best. Callahan had a suspected broken arm and Jansje broke her leg! Nevertheless, they both stayed for the last night.

The Why Games: I now know how it got it's name. There was; baby food, lollies (yum), questionnaires, fizzy drinks and a lot of tummy-aching-people. Everyone had a great time (maybe not everyone) and it was definitely something to remember.

Last day (Friday pack up): The camp had sadly come to an end and we headed back to Wattle Downs. It was a quiet trip back- thankfully. Thank you so much to; parents, teachers, Gordon and his wife, also to all the students who helped to make this camp possible.

Blurb of Locked Part 3

"Jack, are you ok?" Yells Daniel. He slaps him in the face attempting to wake him up.
"We need to get out of here! Smith's coming and he's armed." Jacob panics.
Jacob, Daniel, Luke and Jack have been tricked. They are stuck in a forest-  enclosed by a force field.
Will they find a way to get out and escape from the arms of Smith? Or will they stay Locked?...

Locked Part 3 coming soon.

Locked Part 2- Gemma

Never has Jacob seen so much blood. Especially from his own body. He hangs from his feet in a small, humid room, whip lashes sting his back. His whole body dripping in blood. He's not clueless exactly. For sure, he knows who's responsible for this savage thrashing. Jacob Smith (aka Smith), the school cleaner. Smith's the one who locked him in a bathroom, kidnapped him and took him to this anonymous area. He looks around and sees, once again, he's locked...

Jacob hazily wakes up, just to see Smith standing in front of him. He tries to jump and run away, causing the chain holding him from the ceiling to break and drop him on the concrete floor. This shocks Smith and he launches himself onto Jacob to keep him pinned on the ground.
" No," Jacob cries.
" What have I ever done to you!?" He breathlessly says.
" Do you know how much I get paid for my job? All the times I get bossed around by who, that's right, your Dad." Smith explains to Jacob what he obviously forgot.
Smith bends down and whispers in Jacob's ear " I decided I can't murder a man, so I guess all my options are is," He pauses. "you." Smith pushes off Jacob and walks out of the room, not forgetting to lock the door behind him.

Jacob lies on the ground, no movement at all. He tries to think through what Smith told him. He's too young to die. He needs to escape. Those words linger in his head for the several hours he spends on the ground. How long has he been here? What is happening back home? Are they looking for him? Those questions can't be answered but he is determined to find a way out. As Jacob examines the small room, he spots a window hiding behind some boxes. Realising that this is most likely his only chance of escape, he heaves himself up. Hobbling to the window, he crawls through and steps out to smell the fresh air of a forest.
"That was easy." He says. Jacob is one to take self pride in every good action he does. Sometimes he can be a bit cocky because he doesn't think about the fact that he now has to navigate his way to complete survival. Once Smith sees that Jacob's gone, it is certain he will come looking for him.

Jacob's not prepared, he has; no shirt, ripped shorts (which call for cold nights), his hair looks brown because of all the dirt it's collected (this is not acceptable for Jacob), the chains are still attached to his legs and he has no food. This calls for serious skills from Man vs. Wild and The Hunger Games.  Nevertheless, Jacob starts his trek through the forest. He assumes that if he just walks straight he will end up at the end of the forest.

It has been 1 day and Jacob is so fragile he just wants Smith to come and take him away. He has completely lost hope and doesn't have an ounce of energy left to move. A ladybug lands on Jacob's shoulder. He stares at it for a moment then in a swish move he eats it. " Gross. That was not a smart move." He says, screwing up his face in disgust. Ladybugs must be some source of protein because Jacob feels as if he can continue his journey to the end of the forest. He gets up, feeling good but dives back to the ground. He hears rustling. It's getting louder. No, it's not one person. He hears 1, 2 no 3 pairs of feet tramping towards him. Out sticks a head of a young boy. He then calls the others to come look at Jacob curdled into a ball. First thing they notice is the lashes on his back.
" Hey, dude. We're not going to hurt you. Actually I think we're running for the same reason." Says the boy.

Jacob looks up and sees all 3 boys looking exactly like him; shirtless, blood filled bodies and the same whip lashes cover their backs.  Jacob relaxes his body, his heart still thumping but it seems that they are in the same position as him. He gets up off the ground and they introduce themselves. Daniel, Luke and Jack have been running from Smith too. They also have the idea to keep walking to the edge of the forest. By the look of the bags they are carrying, Jacob has found the right people to meet up with. They have food. Heaps of food. After a bag of chips, the 4 boys together walk to conquer survival.

Clouds are gathering overhead and thunder starts, so do the sound of cars. The boys have walked for days, finishing all the food. They have made it to the edge of the forest. Jack sprints to the opening. He screams and suddenly flings back over the top of Jacob's head. They haven't concurred survival. Not even close. They're just starting.

Descriptive writing- Gemma

My Friend

My friend is also known as a pineapple lump. Her appearance is small but as said — small things come in big packages. A bit crazy, but completely harmless, my friend is.

Sitting relatively close to this person, you can tell she's a bit strange- not like any other. She doesn't like getting into trouble (as I found while writing this description). She may not be an overall athlete but her strong point is her dedicating smarts.

My friend is small with caramel-chocolate eyes and brunette hair. But as said before she is a pineapple lump. Definition: Brunette but down inside, very blonde.

She can be shy but she is definitely very outgoing. Having been in hospital, she was still committed to tag along to support her cross country team. She played during the netball season along with playing the guitar and reading as her hobbies.

My friend is unlike any other with her unique defiance and appearance.

Persuasive writing (speech 2013)- Gemma

You should trial (or play) for a rep team.

Mum said " Even if you don't get it, it's just for experience". But I continued from the trial. Trialing and playing for Counties Manukau Touch and Papakura Netball Reps was a life changing experience that I will never forget. It; makes you feel really good about yourself, introduces you to new people- all different cultures, you learn an extensive range of skills and it can offer you useful values. I strongly believe that you should all trial (and hopefully move on to play) for a rep team.

To start off (if you don't know already), a rep (short for representative) is a group or individual that represents a suburb, region or even a country. They compete against others in sports or academically. Winning a tournament in fantastic because it leads to great opportunities and success.

Do you know the feeling of scoring a try or shooting a goal? Even that moment when your coach yells at you from the sideline to say what a great thing you did back then. You feel really good about yourself. It raises your self Esteem and you will feel bolder. How ever when that low self Esteem moment arrives, still hold your head high, keep calm and carry on.

At the start of my trials I hardly knew anyone but now I have met an ongoing mass of people, not leaving out parents and coaches too. This is awesome because we all bonded and got closer and closer each tournament and practice. It's always good to know that you have a lot of people around you for support and encouragement. Wouldn't you like to be in this warming environment?

Most of all while in a rep team you learn a humongous range of skills. Even rules you didn't know existed in the first place. It improves your play, it can be strict most times but you often come off learning one new thing each practice. Then you can take what you learnt to club teams. So not only you but other people learn from this experience too.

Along the journey off playing in a rep team you start 'grow' values in leadership, cooperation and collaboration. These values will be very useful in school and other activities. This year my coach for reps not only taught us about netball but respect, manners and how to have fun. These life morals will be etched in my mind forever.

Playing a rep team gives you big benefits that start from skills all the way up to College Scholarships. I truly believe if I can play, you can give it a go for yourself to experience. Even if you don't get it you won't regret it.
